Evacuation plan.
In the event of an emergency, the safety of our community is our top priority. Emergency Management Creston (EMC) has an Evacuation Plan to ensure that residents and visitors can quickly and safely evacuate the area if necessary. This page outlines what to expect during an evacuation and how to stay informed.
When an evacuation is announced
In an emergency, EMC will provide clear and timely information on evacuation orders. Evacuation notices will be communicated through multiple channels, including:
- This Website: Official evacuation orders and updates will be posted here and at creston.ca.
- Local Media: Radio, and online news sources will broadcast evacuation information.
- Emergency Alerts: Text messages and phone notifications may be sent through our Voyent Alert system to those in the affected area.
Levels of evacuation
EMC uses a tiered system to manage evacuations:
- Evacuation Alert: Be prepared to leave your home on short notice. Gather essential items, make arrangements for pets, and plan your evacuation route.
- Evacuation Order: You must leave the area immediately. Follow the designated evacuation routes and proceed to the nearest evacuation center or a safe location outside the affected area.
- Evacuation Rescind: It is safe to return home. Continue to follow any public safety advisories and stay informed of any further instructions.
What to do during an evacuation
- Follow Instructions: Pay close attention to the instructions provided by EMC and local authorities. This includes knowing the evacuation route, understanding where to go, and what to bring.
- Pack Essentials: Ensure you have a grab-and-go bag ready with essential items such as:
- Identification and important documents
- Medications and medical supplies
- Food and water for 72 hours
- Clothing and personal hygiene items
- Pet supplies, if applicable
- Check on neighbours: If possible, assist neighbors who may need help evacuating, especially those who are elderly, disabled, or have young children.
- Drive Safely – Follow the designated evacuation routes. Drive carefully, and be mindful of emergency vehicles and personnel.
Evacuation centers
EMC will establish evacuation centres where residents can find shelter, food, and information. The locations of these centres will be announced as part of the evacuation order. If you have family or friends outside the affected area, you may choose to stay with them instead.
Stay informed
During an evacuation, staying informed is critical. Here’s how you can stay updated:
- Visit This Website: We will provide real-time updates on the status of the evacuation, road closures, and other essential information.
- Follow Local Media: Tune in to local radio for the latest news.
- Voyent Alert!: Pay attention to any alerts or notifications you receive on your phone from the Voyent Alert! app.
After the evacuation
Once the evacuation order has been lifted, EMC will work closely with local authorities to ensure that it is safe for residents to return home. Before returning, check for any additional advisories, such as boil water notices or road closures, which may still be in effect.
Remember, preparation is key. Review this plan with your family and ensure that everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency. By staying informed and ready, we can keep our community safe and resilient.
